Recently, Guaranty Trust Bank plc demonstrated its resolve to remain a proactive institution when it gave Nigeria’s brand marketing and advertising sectors an added edge by sponsoring the Buyology symposium which had Mr. Martin Lindstrom - a world acclaimed branding expert and author of Buyology as the resource person and facilitator.Buyology is a chronicle of the results of a pioneering 3-year, $7million dollar Neuromarketing study that used the latest in brain technology to find what drives the buying decisions of consumers and ultimately, the brand.

Before now, not many knew who Lindstrom was, or what Neuromarketing is and how it is rewriting the rules of marketing, purchasing power and branding as we know it. However, through what a participant called “GTBank’s magnanimity”, stakeholders were updated on the phenomenon of Neuromarketing and its potential as a tool for building and maintaining super-brands.

Mr. Lindstrom sits on several boards globally, and his clients include Disney, Pepsi, LEGO, American Express, Mercedes-Benz, Reuters, McDonald’s, Kellogg’s and Microsoft. His book Buyology has been translated into over 25 languages.

Undoubtedly, his wealth of knowledge, which world-class brands daily exploit with outstanding results, would have remained obscure in these parts until Guaranty Trust Bank granted a cross-section of Nigerians the opportunity of an afternoon with Lindstrom at the Lagoon Restaurant, Lagos.

Present at the seminar to hear Lindstrom introduce a new perspective to corporate branding were university undergraduates, marketing and advertising professionals from the banking industry, as well as other arms of corporate Nigeria. They were joined by top management staff of Guaranty Trust Bank led by the Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Tayo Aderinokun.

Speaking at the occasion, Mrs. Lola Odedina, Deputy General Manager, Guaranty Trust Bank stated that the rationale behind the Buyology symposium was inspired by a broader perspective: “our bank is committed to resonating with the Nigerian people through consistent intellectual empowerment programmes. We aim to create brand consciousness amongst service providers and the customer, as doing this will bring about a healthy consumer-centered society.”

In his remarks, Mr. Chris Doghudje, Chairman, Advertising Practitioners Council of Nigeria (APCON) stated that the precedence of the customer was the focus of the Buyology Symposium as the book itself is the future of advertising as it efficiently charts a course for brand builders in identifying what is wanting or wanted in marketing strategies and campaigns.

Barely two weeks after the bank received the 2008 Deal of the Year Award for Nigeria from the Banker: Financial Times, Guaranty Trust Bank on Saturday, August 16, 2008 mounted the rostrum yet again to receive an award for emerging the 2008 Best Bank in Mobile Banking at the Nigerian Telecom Awards. Guaranty Trust Bank finished ahead of First Inland Bank and Diamond Bank.

The award was in recognition of the bank’s innovative alternative service delivery channels - GeNs and GTConnect. Customers are kept abreast of transactions on their account(s) through GeNs while GTConnect; Nigeria’s first fully interactive contact centre allows customers of the bank conduct virtually all banking transactions; anywhere and anytime.
The Nigerian Telecom Awards is an annual event; organized by Logica Telecom Awards Limited, to recognize and celebrate excellence in service delivery on banking transactions via the mobile network and the criteria for deciding the winner of this award are the spread of transaction and transaction notification. The Award is yet another attestation to the fact that Guaranty Trust Bank is not resting on its oars in striving to be the best at what it does; even amidst several awards, accolades and recognitions.

Mr. Isa Omagu, Group Head, Telecommunications, while receiving the award on behalf of the bank stated, “… it is our commitment to customer centric banking that has pioneered the introduction of GeNs and GTConnect into the Nigerian banking menu list.”

The Guaranty Trust Bank’s awards and recognitions cabinet has continued to struggle for space to accommodate its ever growing list of laurels. The bank was voted the Most Respected Financial Institution by PriceWaterhouseCoopers; Bank of the Year, Best Bank in Corporate Governance, Best Bank for Brand Development and the Most Customer Friendly Bank in Nigeria by Vanguard Newspapers; as well as Bank of the Year and Brand of the Year by Thisday Newspapers.

This ever growing list of achievements serve to bolster the bank’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s most profitable and fastest growing banks and reinforces the AA- (double A minus) by Fitch; and BB- (double B minus) by Standard & Poor’s, the best ratings assigned by the two international rating agencies to any Nigerian or West African-based bank. Remarkably, the Standard & Poor’s rating is the same as Nigeria’s sovereign rating.

“CREATING DIALOGUE BETWEEN WESTERN AND AFRICAN LIFESTYLE, MUSIC, ARTS AND DESIGN”

5th January, 2009: The Prada Foundation (founded 15 years ago) recently launched The Double Club project, conceived by renowned German artist Carsten Höller and supported by Guaranty Trust Bank plc, West Africa’s leading financial institution. The foundation has over the years garnered a reputation in world art circles for presenting the projects of many ambitious artists.
The “Double Club” is an African art and Culture initiative situated near the Angel Tube Station in Islington, North London, UK. It is an installation which consists of three spaces: bar, restaurant and dance club. The restaurant boasts both African and Western menus, while the decor includes outstanding art works from the West (paintings by Carla Accardi, Olle Baertling, a relief by Louise Nevelson, an embroidered map by Alighiero Boetti and a silkscreen on paper by Andy Warhol) and from Congo (the stage dress of the guitarist Luambo Makiadi, a.k.a Franco, and paintings by Cheri Samba and Mosengwo Kejwamfi, a.k.a Moke the Painter).
The Double Club is a non-profit organisation and by partnering with the Prada Foundation and Guaranty Trust Bank, a percentage of the proceeds will go to charity. This is one of the primary reasons for which Guaranty Trust Bankadopted the project. At a series of events to launch this laudable initiative, Miuccia Prada of the Prada luxury label and her husband, Patrizio Bertelli played host to industry leaders from world-class institutions such as JP Morgan, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, White & Case, Standard Bank of London, Schlumberger and Morgan Stanley.
Segun Agbaje, Deputy Managing Director, Guaranty Trust Bank plc, ace designers Ozwald Boateng, Alexander McQueen and Pat McGrath, awardwinning celebrity make-up artist and global creative design director, Procter and Gamble were all present at the landmark event. GTBank will also be partnering in a cultural programme to be presented during the opening months of The Double Club. A fund-raising event is also scheduled for February 2009, whilst a book and music compilation documenting the various stages of the project will be published by the Prada Foundation.
In partnering with the Prada Foundation, Guaranty Trust Bank plc is further cementing its famed interest in supporting the arts whilst making its mark via its UK banking subsidiary. Mr. Agbaje stated that “in co-sponsoring the Double Club launch, Guaranty Trust Bank has covered a range of its corporate social responsibility goals.” He further stated that the Bank would continually support humanity and the arts, regardless of location, in line with the Bank’s goal to remain a world-class financial institution.
